  1. Orpheus in the Underworld is the second of ENO's four Orpheus operas this season; each composer takes the same basic myth. Orpheus and Eurydice have parted, Eurydice is poisoned during a dalliance and goes to the underworld. Orpheus can only regain her if he does turn to face Eurydice as he leads her back up to earth.
  2. Dec 29,  · Orpheus in the Underworld is one of Offenbach's justifiably famous works, it is enormous fun and has great music. I thoroughly enjoyed this production, though my first choice will always be the Natalie Dessay /10(1).
  3. Unlike many operas, “Orpheus in the Underworld” will be sung in English with projected text over the stage. The operetta will also feature tuneful dancing like the famous can-can and a romantic, hellish scene between Eurydice, Orpheus’ wife, and a fly who both take part in a duet comprised of buzzing.
  4. The reluctant Orpheus can rescue Eurydice from the underworld, on the condition he does not turn to look back at her. On their way out, however, Jupiter (who has since fallen in love with Eurydice) scares him into turning back. Eurydice vanishes back into the underworld and everyone is thrilled with the result. ENO is currently not performing.
  5. That done, Pluto takes her down to his underworld realm. Orpheus finds Eurydice's note and, after his initial surprise, realises how pleased he is to be rid of his wife. His joy is short-lived. Public Opinion enters and demands that Orpheus go down to Hades to get Eurydice hack.

  8. "Orpheus in the Underworld" was mentioned in the film "Green Book", so I was curious to hear it. The music is unusual and won't be recognized from anything you hear in the movie. The second album on this compilation is Shirley playing in a way he claimed to detest: solo cocktail bar piano. I enjoyed his creative takes on standards, however.4/5(37).
  9. Offenbach celebrated by writing his first full-length operetta, Orpheus in the Underworld (Orphée aux enfers), which mocked both Gluck’s opera based on the same myth (a composer who was favoured by the elite) and the Second French Empire.
